Renaissance Magazine is an indie publication that is envisioned, sourced, and created to inspire and reflect the modern woman.
The title is a play on the infamous “Renaissance Man” archetype in world culture: the man that can do anything. Instead, Renaissance Mag captures what a Renaissance Woman looks like. This publication considers the multi-faceted nature of womanhood that focuses not only on sex, fashion, and beauty, but politics, music, art, travel, fitness, mental health, etc. This magazine is a reflection of the “Femininominen” culture in media (and beyond) of women being unabashedly authentic; everything from the stories, photos, and design are produced by women, for women. Renaissance Mag reminds us ladies what it feels like to be not only acknowledged, but celebrated.

design concept
The design of Renaissance is bold, bright, and unapologetically confident. The aesthetic is characterized by its bold colors, layered/collage-y photo treatment, handwritten type, and marker illustrations that are seen throughout the publication. Its modern palette unites its myriad of topics, from the history of feminism to personal travel blogs. This magazine is not your run-of-the-mill capitalist tabloid; it is an aesthetic publication meant to truly be read and ingested. The photo treatment is textured and layered, akin to collage and scrapbooking, which is an often female-associated hobby. This design element added expressive personality and a “home-made” essence to this still professional work. You can view various spreads of the work, or click the link to see its entirety.
Disclaimer
This project was created my senior year at the University of Missouri (2023) and was never published. I did write the first story about Amsterdam, and I do own all travel photos in the Amsterdam and Paris stories. I, however, did not write stories 2-5 (their authors are credited under the titles), and I do not own the music mentioned, nor the brands of the companies I designed advertisements for. All aspects of this magazine were curated and collected purely from passion and fun and are not meant to be used commercially.
